Everybody knows you gain fat by over eating, but did you know you can also gain fat by under eating? If we keep our food intake too low for too long we activate our body's survival mechanisms. First the body strives to maintain its internal fuel supply. The body partitions off fat stores and turns to alternative fuel reserves such as muscle. Muscle is the body's fat burning furnace, as we lose muscle we lose the ability to burn fat. Second, anytime you eat any amount of fuel (food) your body doesn't need right at that time, it will do an AMAZING job of storing it away for later use. What does that mean; more fat. What does all this mean for you? If you are trying to drop a little body fat be patient and go slow. Reduce calories slightly by cutting back on empty foods (like candy and soda) and energy dense (high calorie) foods like bread, cereals, and fruit juice. We didn't gain all that body fat overnight so don't expect it to go away that fast either.
